It is well known that as Machen lay dying, having gone through blizzards to visit a church in North Dakota that was in trouble, and having thus contracted pneumonia, he telegraphed his friend Professor John Murray at Westminster Seminary with these words: "Thank God for the act of obedience of Christ; no hope without it."
